If you were to ask people if they have values, the answer will without hesitation be in the affirmative. They have national, cultural, traditional, religious, moral values, on and on ad nauseum. The September issue of Nile Journal is devoted to discussions of different aspects of social values. People are always forced to choose between which values to respect and which ones to violate, when, why and how.
The military man that he was, his targets were carefully chosen. With him everything had a purpose. Once in what seemed like a random and stupid act, he had his men along with a bunch of journalists, proclaim and crown him King of Scotland. A carefully chosen tune played in the background, softly, very softly, but it was audible. As they placed the gold and crimson crown upon his head the police brass band struck up and played the tune out loud.

The disease you are suffering from was precisely diagnosed by late Hon. Eriya Kategaya referring to you in his little book, “Impassioned for Freedom.” In that book, Kategaya writes as follows: “I have observed that the longer one stays in power, the more one is insulated from reality. The trappings of state apparatus tend to make one live an unrealistic existence.”
There have never been such massive crowds of anti-government protestors in the countries of the ex-Soviet Union as there are this week. In Minsk, the capital of Belarus and in other major cities, they stretch as far as the television cameras can see.
To say India has become a big player on the world stage is cliché but it is true. A year ago, it overtook the United Kingdom as the 5th largest economy in the world. Today its military ranks 4th in the world. The influence of its soft power as embodied in Bollywood is global. It is not pointless to pose the question: what constitute Indian values? But the question is inherently a complex one. No clear-cut answers are possible.
